Did Sir Francis Chichester ever imagine his name would grace a humble cottage in Hobsonville Point? Chichester Cottage, a small, unassuming building, holds a surprising amount of history. It stands as a testament to the past, whispering stories of early Auckland life and daring adventures. Chichester Cottage dates back to 1927. It originally served as temporary housing for Doug and Audrey Mill while they built their grand home, Mill House, next door. The cottage later became a guest retreat. Its most famous guest was Sir Francis Chichester, the renowned British sailor and aviator. Chichester’s stay at the cottage in 1931 marked a pivotal moment in his life. He was preparing for his solo flight across the Tasman Sea. Hobsonville engineering staff assisted him, overhauling his Gypsy Moth biplane. They installed long-range tanks and attached floats. Chichester, armed with a newly acquired sextant, navigated by the sun, successfully completing his daring feat. Decades later, the same “Gipsy Moth” name adorned his yacht as he circumnavigated the globe, becoming the first person to do so single-handedly. Chichester Cottage narrowly escaped demolition during the redevelopment of Hobsonville Airbase. Recognized as an important piece of local history, it was restored and gifted to the Hobsonville Point Residents Society. Today, Chichester Cottage serves the community, hosting small gatherings and events. It’s a charming venue, ideal for meetings, workshops, or even a quiet afternoon of reflection. The cottage’s large main room, along with its kitchen and bathroom, offers a comfortable space for up to 20 people. As you stand before Chichester Cottage, imagine Sir Francis Chichester pacing within its walls, dreaming of his next adventure. The cottage is more than just a building. It’s a tangible link to a bygone era, a quiet reminder of the courage and ingenuity of those who came before us.
