Imagine a valley nestled amongst the Kinglake Ranges. This is Steels Creek. A place shaped by the flow of its namesake creek. A place where history whispers through the trees.

Steels Creek isn’t just a name on a map. It’s a living testament to resilience. It’s a community forged in the heart of a valley. European settlers arrived in the 1880s. They found a valley ripe for timber. The opening of the railway to Melbourne in 1888 boomed the local economy. Paling splitters and timber cutters thrived. Steels Creek prospered.

But Steels Creek wasn’t just about timber. Farmers tilled the land. Orchards blossomed. The alluvial gold rushes of the 1860s and 1890s added another chapter to its story. Though farming and timber proved more enduring than gold. A school opened in 1886. A post office followed four years later. These additions solidified the community’s growth. A testament to the settlers’ determination.

Life in Steels Creek wasn’t without its challenges. The school burned down in 1943. Classes were temporarily held in the local church. A new school building was constructed. It served the community until 1992 when it closed. It lives on today as a community center. A poignant reminder of times gone by.

Then came Black Saturday in 2009. A devastating bushfire tore through Steels Creek. Over 25 houses were destroyed. Ten residents lost their lives. Yet even in the face of such unimaginable loss the community center survived. A symbol of hope amidst the ashes.

Steels Creek’s population has fluctuated throughout its history. From 130 in 1911 to 74 in 1961. In 2011 it saw a resurgence with 199 residents. It continued to grow recording a population of 276 in 2021.

Steels Creek’s story is one of hardship. It’s a tale of resilience. It’s a testament to the enduring spirit of a community. A community that has faced challenges head on. It continues to thrive in this picturesque valley. It’s a story that continues to unfold. Remember Steels Creek. Remember its strength. Remember its history.
