“Craving a seaside escape without leaving the city?” That’s what they say about Nishi Ward in Fukuoka. Let me tell you about this fantastic place. Nishi Ward, literally “west ward”, is one of Fukuoka City’s seven wards. It is bordered by Sawara-ku to the east and Itoshima to the west.

Nishi Ward’s story is also one of growth. Back in 2003, about 173,813 people called Nishi Ward home. By 2016, the population had grown to 206,000. More people wanted to be part of this vibrant community. The Nanakuma Line added to the Fukuoka City Subway improved access, too. The Chikuhi Line also serves the ward.

Nishi Ward once covered a larger area. In 1972, when Fukuoka became a designated city, Nishi Ward was huge. But on May 1, 1982, it was divided. Nishi-ku, Sawara-ku, and Jōnan-ku were created.

Nishi Ward offers many attractions. Marinoa City Fukuoka is an outlet mall. It features the Sky Wheel, a Ferris wheel, and is a great place for shopping. You can see Marinoa City Fukuoka from the top of the Sky Wheel.

Fukuoka City Odo Yacht Harbor provides a place for sailing. Nokonoshima Island is a short ferry ride away.

Speaking of Nokonoshima Island, it is a true gem in Nishi Ward. Just a quick ten-minute ferry trip from Noko Ferry Terminal, it is a favorite spot for locals seeking relaxation. Nokonoshima Island Park is the highlight. Seasonal flowers bloom all year. Rape blossoms in spring, sunflowers in summer, cosmos in autumn, and camellias in winter create breathtaking views.

Imagine standing in a field of sunflowers. They stretch as far as the eye can see. This picturesque scene draws many visitors. They come to photograph the magnificent sunflower fields. Some even pick sunflowers to take home. Nishi Ward is also home to Yukari Oshima, a Japanese actress. She is a martial artist popular throughout Asia.

Nishi Ward’s charm lies in its blend of urban convenience and natural beauty. From shopping at Marinoa City to exploring Nokonoshima Island, there’s something for everyone. The ward’s growth reflects its appeal. It’s a place where people want to live, work, and play.
