Could a city be split in two? Auckland almost was. The Waitematā Harbour slices through the city, separating the bustling CBD from the North Shore. For decades, the Auckland Harbour Bridge has been the sole link, a vital artery now choked by the demands of a growing city. This, my friends, is the story of the Additional Waitematā Harbour Crossing, a saga of ambition, engineering, and the constant struggle to keep Auckland connected. The current bridge, opened in 1959, quickly became overloaded. “Clip-on” lanes were added in 1969, a temporary fix for a persistent problem. The Additional Waitematā Harbour Crossing, often called the AWHC, isn’t just one project, but a series of evolving proposals. As Auckland grew, so did the urgency for a solution. Studies in the late 1990s suggested a new bridge or tunnel, a concept revisited in the mid-2000s. One ambitious idea involved twin tunnels for vehicles and twin tunnels for public transport, a vision championed by a lobbying group called the Waitematā Harbour Crossing study group. They even proposed demolishing the Victoria Park Viaduct. A grand alternative emerged in 2007: the “Anzac Centenary Bridge.” This colossal structure, proposed by Jasmax architectural firm, would dwarf the existing bridge and accommodate light rail, cyclists, pedestrians, and vehicles. The idea was to demolish the old bridge after the new one was built, freeing up valuable waterfront land. The Additional Waitematā Harbour Crossing continued to generate debate and discussion. A 2010 study proposed three crossings—a bridge, a road tunnel, and a heavy rail tunnel. In 2011, the focus shifted to adding pedestrian and cycling paths to the existing bridge, a project known as “Skypath.” But escalating costs led to its cancellation in 2021. Fast forward to 2023, and five new options were unveiled. These “Waitematā Harbour Connections” proposals ranged from light rail tunnels to new bridges, all designed to integrate with Auckland’s future light rail network. An “Emerging Preferred Option” surfaced, featuring a light rail tunnel, two road tunnels to bypass the CBD, and upgrades to the existing bridge. However, this ambitious plan, estimated to cost between $35 and $45 billion, faced criticism for its cost and feasibility. The Additional Waitematā Harbour Crossing remains a work in progress. The debate continues, the need is undeniable, and the future of Auckland’s connection across the Waitematā Harbour hangs in the balance.
