Fifty-seven feet tall it stands a testament to faith and history. This is the Prayerbook Cross also known as the Drake Cross. Erected in 1894 in Golden Gate Park it commemorates a significant event. Sir Francis Drake’s chaplain Francis Fletcher held the first Anglican service on the Pacific Coast of America. This was near Drakes Bay around St John the Baptist’s Day June 24 1579.

The Prayerbook Cross is more than just a monument. It represents the earliest days of Christianity in what is now the United States. George William Childs a Philadelphia publisher funded its construction. He was a Union supporter and philanthropist. The cross was originally planned for Point Reyes. However its visibility from the ocean and the city made Golden Gate Park a better choice.

The cross is made of blue sandstone from Colusa County. It’s composed of 68 pieces weighing a total of 600000 pounds. Each arm consists of eight massive pieces each weighing 24000 pounds. Imagine the effort required to raise this colossal structure.

The inscription on the front of the Prayerbook Cross tells the story of its creation and the historical event it celebrates. The back inscription proclaims the significance of this first Christian service in the English tongue on the American coast. The words Soli Deo sit semper gloria God alone be the glory forever are a powerful statement of faith.

Throughout the years the Prayerbook Cross has been the site of many Episcopal services. Annual celebrations and pilgrimages have marked its enduring importance. While mostly hidden by trees today it remains a fascinating and significant landmark. Its story echoes across centuries a reminder of faith exploration and the enduring legacy of Sir Francis Drake and his chaplain. The Prayerbook Cross a powerful symbol in Golden Gate Park’s heart stands as a silent witness to history.
