“A marvel of engineering” This is the Pont Eiffel de Conflans-Sainte-Honorine. It’s not the Eiffel Tower but a bridge. A testament to Gustave Eiffel’s genius. It stands proudly over the Oise River. Connecting Conflans-Sainte-Honorine and Andrésy.
The original Pont Eiffel de Conflans-Sainte-Honorine was built in 1892. Eiffel’s company handled the metalwork. The Soubigou company built the masonry piers. It was a double-track railway bridge. It was almost 206 meters long. It was 8.95 meters wide.
World War II brought destruction. In 1940 the French army damaged it. They dynamited the piers. The bridge broke in two. It was repaired but later destroyed again in 1944. A single bomb caused this destruction.
A new Pont Eiffel de Conflans-Sainte-Honorine rose in 1947. The Bacci company built the piers. The Société des Ponts et Travaux en Fer built the deck. This new structure was different. It was shorter only 160 meters long. It bore little resemblance to the original design.
Despite the changes the name endured. The local memory clung to the name Pont Eiffel. The name lives on in nearby shops and businesses. The railway stop was called Conflans-Pont-Eiffel for a long time. It changed to Conflans-Fin-d’Oise later. A cafe called Le Pont Eiffel still exists today a reminder of this resilient structure. The Pont Eiffel de Conflans-Sainte-Honorine. A story of destruction and rebirth. A bridge that refuses to be forgotten.
