Have you heard of a church that had to make way for a highway? Right here, before you stands Paróquia de Santo André. Paróquia de Santo André’s history is deeply intertwined with the development of Rio de Janeiro. The original church, dedicated to Saint John the Baptist and Our Lady of Relief, was built in 1872 in São Cristóvão. It later became known as the Matriz da Ponta do Caju, also dedicated to Saint Andrew. The Augustinian Fathers administered it until 1909. Paróquia de Santo André officially became a parish in the Archdiocese of São Sebastião do Rio de Janeiro on June 29, 1920. The church thrived under Father Porfírio Vilena de Souza for nearly 40 years, starting in 1939. Sadly, the old church building was demolished in the mid-1970s to make way for the Linha Vermelha highway. This dramatic turn marked a new chapter for Paróquia de Santo André. The cornerstone for the new church was laid in 1975 by Bishop Dom Alberto Navarro. The construction was completed on December 5, 1976. Paróquia de Santo André also played a role in the creation of the new São João Paulo II Parish in Caju. Its territory was once much larger but was divided in 2012. This division led to the creation of the new parish. Today, Paróquia de Santo André continues its mission with Father Márcio Luiz, the 19th parish priest. It includes the main church and three chapels: Nossa Senhora dos Pobres, Imaculada Conceição, and Nossa Senhora de Fátima. The church’s story is one of resilience and adaptation. It stands as a testament to the enduring faith of the community.
