The Fürst-Wrede-Kaserne, a place steeped in military history, stands before you. In 1936, it was built by the German Wehrmacht and named the Verdun-Kaserne. After World War II, however, the US Army took over the barracks, renaming it to Will-Kaserne and expanding it. From 1969, it became a Bundeswehr base. In 1972, the name was changed again, this time in memory of the Bavarian Field Marshal Carl Philipp von Wrede, a name that has remained since. But did you know that this is the first publicly-privately partnered building project of the German government in the field of civil engineering? It is! A subsidiary of Hochtief redesigned and renovated the infrastructure from 2008 to 2010 and will operate it until 2028. This project is considered a pilot program for the entire country. The Fürst-Wrede-Kaserne might seem like just another building. But it is so much more than that. It is a place that has seen a nation’s history unfold in its walls. It is a place that has seen brave soldiers defend their country. It is a place that has seen hope and courage rise in times of uncertainty. So stand here in front of the imposing sight of the Fürst-Wrede-Kaserne. Let your imagination fly and imagine the stories that have unfolded within its walls.
