Established in 1874 Lick-Wilmerding High School boasts a rich history. Originally the California School of Mechanical Arts it was the brainchild of James Lick a visionary who left a considerable trust to fund the school. Imagine a time when free education for boys and girls was revolutionary. That was Lick’s aim. He wanted to create educated craftsmen.

The school wasn’t alone. Nearby stood the Wilmerding School of Industrial Arts and the Lux School for Industrial Training for Girls. These schools shared facilities and a director George Merrill. Think of it a collaborative educational campus. A unique system focused on technical and vocational skills. Lux focused on sewing textiles food health art and retail. It later closed in 1952. Its legacy however continues at Lick-Wilmerding.

In the early 1950s Lick and Wilmerding merged. This created Lick-Wilmerding High School. The students from Lux joined them. The combined school moved to its present location at 755 Ocean Avenue in 1956. This is where we stand today.

Lick-Wilmerding wasn’t just about technical skills. It offered a broad curriculum. Students were required to take technical arts courses performing arts and visual arts classes. The school is known for its strong academics. In 2014 the Huffington Post ranked Lick-Wilmerding among the top high schools nationally based on SAT scores. The school also has a thriving arts program including theatre dance music and visual arts.

Today Lick-Wilmerding continues its tradition of excellence. It offers a unique blend of academic and technical education. This fosters innovation and creativity. It’s a private school with a public purpose. It strives to develop students’ heads hearts and hands. The goal is to create lifelong learners who contribute positively to the world. This is the spirit of Lick-Wilmerding. A legacy built on innovation collaboration and a commitment to education. A remarkable San Francisco institution with a bright future.
