“Ever dream of unraveling life’s greatest mysteries?” That’s the spirit embodied right here at the Shanghai Jiao Tong University School of Life Sciences and Technology. Known simply as the School of Life Sciences, or “Shengke,” this institution stands as a beacon of biological innovation.
Founded in 1997, the School of Life Sciences emerged from a collaboration. Shanghai Jiao Tong University joined forces with the Shanghai Branch of the Chinese Academy of Sciences. This partnership transformed the original Department of Biological Science and Technology. It also incorporated the Biomedical Engineering Teaching and Research Section.
Today, the School of Life Sciences houses four departments. These are Biological Science and Technology, Biological Engineering and Biomedical Engineering. There is also Biological Information and Biostatistics. The school also features a Biological Experiment Teaching Center. Currently, Zhang Yiyi leads the school as its Dean.
Did you know that the School of Life Sciences offers a comprehensive academic program? It includes two primary disciplines: Biology and Biomedical Engineering. The school provides four undergraduate majors. There are also specialized base classes with independent enrollment. Furthermore, it boasts five doctoral programs and eight master’s programs. Aspiring engineers can pursue two professional master’s degrees. Moreover, there are two postdoctoral research stations available.
The School of Life Sciences is home to leading experts. Two academicians from the Chinese Academy of Sciences contribute here. Also one academician from the Chinese Academy of Engineering enriches the faculty.
In April 1979, the Biomedical Instrument Specialty and its teaching and research section were established. By September 1982, the Institute of Biotechnology was founded. This was formerly known as the research office. In July 1985, the Department of Biological Science and Technology was established.
In 2000, the Bio-X Center came into being. By September 2002, the Bioinformatics major was established. In 2008, the Department of Biological Information and Biostatistics was founded.
Notably, in November 2010, Luc Montagnier became a chair professor at Jiaoda. He was the 2008 Nobel laureate in Physiology or Medicine. The School of Life Sciences established the Montagnier Research Institute.
Sharing space with the School of Pharmacy, the School of Life Sciences occupies the Biomedical Building. This building is located in the northeast section of Shanghai Jiao Tong University’s Minhang campus.
