Tucked away in the bustling heart of Shanghai, Yanghang town whispers tales of a rich and layered past. Yanghang, whose name translates to “poplar bank,” isn’t just a name. It’s a reflection of the very landscape that shaped its identity. Originally, Yanghang was known as Yangshupu, a moniker derived from the Yangshupu Creek. This creek, lined with poplar trees, flowed through the heart of the area, connecting the Qiu River in the north to the Huangpu River in the south. The creek became a lifeline for the burgeoning communities along its banks, fostering trade and agriculture. Yanghang’s story intertwines with the larger narrative of Shanghai. The area we know as Yanghang became part of the Shanghai Concession in 1863, following the Treaty of Nanking which opened Shanghai as a treaty port. This marked the beginning of Yanghang’s transformation into an industrial powerhouse. In the late 19th century, factories began to spring up, especially along Yangshupu Road. The Shanghai Machinery and Papermaking Office opened its doors in 1882, followed by the Yangshupu Waterworks in 1883. One of China’s earliest modern textile factories, the Shanghai Machine Weaving Office, was established in 1890. By the early 20th century, industries related to textiles, paper-making, and shipbuilding thrived in the area. The journalist and revolutionary Chen Duxiu observed this rapid industrialization, noting Yanghupu’s burgeoning industrial landscape in the New Youth magazine in the 1920s. Yanghang has also witnessed the shifting tides of political power. During the Japanese occupation from 1937 to 1945, the area became home to military barracks and housing. After the Communist victory in 1949, Yanghang underwent further development, its boundaries expanding over the following decades. Heavy industries took root, shaping the district’s economic character. Later, with the rise of Pudong, Yanghang’s territories south of the Huangpu River were incorporated into the new district in 1992. Yanghang continues to evolve. While residential communities dominate the southern part, the district now embraces commerce and high technology alongside its industrial heritage. Yanghang’s story is etched into the fabric of Shanghai. It’s a story of transformation, resilience, and the enduring presence of the poplar-lined creek that gave it its name.
