Reflecting the sun’s rays, the Temple du Change stands before us. This building has had many lives. It began as a place for money exchange. Then it became a protestant church. It is now a monument historique.

Originally, the Temple du Change was built between 1631 and 1653. Architect Simon Gourdet designed the first building. But Lyon’s money exchange quickly outgrew it. The building needed renovation.

Jacques-Germain Soufflot stepped in during 1748. He provided plans to enlarge the Temple du Change. Architect Jean-Baptiste Roche carried out Soufflot’s vision. The renovation significantly changed the building’s appearance. Houses next to the Temple du Change were torn down. This made room for a fifth arch in front. A large rectangular room was added behind the facade. It features an imperial-styled roof. Four massive pillars support the roof. Soufflot’s neoclassical style was unusual for that time.

During the French Revolution, the Temple du Change was abandoned. For a short time, it served as an inn. In 1803, the building was assigned to Protestants. It became a place of worship. The Temple du Change has been a Protestant church ever since. Minor changes occurred inside during the 19th century.

Look closely at the facade. You may notice two clocks were added in 1999. The city of Lyon and Renaissance du Vieux Lyon installed them. The clock on the right is traditional. It shows hours and minutes. The clock on the left is different. It marks days, months, and years.

Interestingly, there was a plan to rebuild the Temple du Change. In the mid-19th century, Lyon had 10000 Protestants. The Temple du Change could only hold 600 people. A larger place of worship was considered necessary. However, the rebuilding never happened.

The Temple du Change was classified as a monument historique in 1913. This designation protects its historical and cultural significance. Today, the Temple du Change also hosts concerts. Its acoustics and historical ambiance make it a unique venue.

The Temple du Change stands as a testament to Lyon’s history. It reflects the city’s economic past. It showcases its religious diversity. The Temple du Change also exemplifies architectural evolution. From a money exchange to a Protestant church, its story is etched in its walls. Take a moment to appreciate the Temple du Change. It is a symbol of Lyon’s enduring spirit.
