Founded in 1905 the Iglesia Luterana in Buenos Aires holds a special place in the city’s history. It wasn’t built overnight. Its story is one of faith perseverance and growth. Missionaries from the Lutheran Church Missouri Synod arrived in Aldea San Juan Entre Rios province. They began their work among Russian-German immigrants. This humble beginning marked the start of the Evangelical Lutheran Church of Argentina.

The church’s influence expanded throughout the years. It reached into other provinces like Chaco. More Russian-German immigrants from the Volga region joined the congregation. For decades the church operated under the Brazilian District of the LCMS. This changed in 1926 or 1927 when a new Argentine District was formed. This district included congregations in Argentina Uruguay Paraguay and Chile.

A significant milestone came in 1986. The Iglesia Luterana finally gained independence becoming the IELA. The IELA is a conservative confessional Lutheran synod upholding the Book of Concord. It has approximately 27890 members. It’s a remarkable achievement for a church that started with a few missionaries and immigrants.

The IELA’s commitment to education is equally impressive. Seminary training initially took place in Porto Alegre Brazil. Then in 1942 Seminario Concordia was established in Villa Ballester. This seminary later moved to Jose Leon Suarez in Buenos Aires in 1948. Colegio Concordia a preparatory school was also opened in 1956 in Obera Misiones.

Today the Iglesia Luterana stands as a testament to faith community and education. It is part of the larger international Lutheran community. It continues to serve the Argentinian community and beyond. It plays an active role in educating its members. The story of the Iglesia Luterana is far from over. It continues to evolve reflecting the dynamism of the community it serves. The church’s legacy remains a powerful symbol of faith and resilience in the heart of Buenos Aires.
