“What does loyalty mean to you?” That’s a question echoing from the very ground beneath Saint Matthew Missionary Baptist Church. It stands as a testament to faith. It embodies faithfulness in the heart of the community.
Saint Matthew Missionary Baptist Church has a rich history. Its foundation dates back to 1929. A group of dedicated leaders united. Their aim was to establish a place of worship. They wanted to spread the gospel. Their initial meeting took place in the yard of Sister Rosie Breaux.
The church’s early days saw Reverend M. E. Roberson leading the congregation. He took over the leadership in 1929. Later, in 1931, Reverend E. S. Branch assumed the role of pastor. Several ministers followed. These included Reverend O. B. Brent, Reverend Martin, Reverend S. P. Baker, Reverend H. Williams, Reverend Adams, and Reverend H. T. Aldridge.
A significant chapter unfolded on April 11, 1945. Reverend T. J. Anderson was appointed as the pastor. Under his guidance, the church experienced growth. In 1949, a new church building was constructed. Sister Annie Richmond spearheaded the fundraising efforts. Deacon Eddie T. Jones provided the inspired design. However, in May 1955, Reverend Anderson stepped down.
July 1955 marked the arrival of Reverend Cecil M. Davis, Sr. He was called to lead the church. His leadership ushered in a new era. A new edifice was erected. On April 26, 1970, the congregation marched into their new place of worship. They sang “We’ve Come This Far By Faith.” The former church building transformed into a Fellowship Hall. By April 26, 1979, they celebrated their 50th anniversary. They also rejoiced at the burning of the mortgage. Reverend Davis retired in 1991 after 36 years of service.
In September 1992, Reverend Leroy Lacy, Jr. became the pastor. He is a dynamic preacher and teacher. He brought renewed energy to the church. New ministries and programs emerged. These included New Member Orientation classes. Also, the Kingdom Builder Educational Ministry. This provided scholarships. It encouraged academic excellence. Other initiatives included Children’s Church, a Nursery, and the Bread of Life Food Pantry. Not to mention the Media Ministry and Sr. Saints Ministry.
Under Pastor Lacy’s guidance, the church acquired surrounding properties. They expanded parking lots. Upgrades included microphones and a recording system. Renovations enhanced the Sanctuary. A security system with voice boxes was installed. January 1999 was a milestone. Reverend Leroy Lacy, Jr. became the church’s first full-time pastor.
In January 2003, the church faced a temporary displacement. The building needed a complete renovation. From January to July 2003, worship services were held elsewhere. The remodeled edifice featured numerous updates and improvements.
Another landmark arrived in March 2007. Pastor Lacy’s vision of a Family Life Center materialized. Construction finished in November 2008. On December 14, 2008, the classrooms were dedicated. They were named after influential figures in the church’s history. The multipurpose room was named after Rev. Cecil M. Davis, Sr.
Saint Matthew Missionary Baptist Church stands tall. It’s a testament to faith, leadership, and community. The church continues to thrive. It spreads its message. It impacts lives. It is carrying the gospel to a lost world. The church continues the life of Christ.
