“Union is the strength. Let everybody make his mind and have no jealousy. Our religion is one. We will surprise the Americans. Let us stick like brothers.” These inspiring words, spoken by George Brown, a Greek veteran of the Civil War, perfectly capture the spirit that birthed the First Greek American Orthodox Church we stand before today.

Nestled amongst the hustle and bustle of Chicago, the First Greek American Orthodox Church stands as a testament to the enduring faith and resilience of the Greek Orthodox community. Its roots reach back to the 1880s, a time when Chicago was a melting pot of cultures and dreams.

The Greek immigrants who arrived in those early years carried their faith with them, seeking solace and connection in this new land. They initially worshipped alongside their Slavic Orthodox brethren in rented spaces, united by a shared belief despite their diverse origins. But the desire for their own spiritual home grew stronger, leading to the establishment of Annunciation, the second exclusively Greek parish in America, in April 1892. This marked a turning point, a declaration of their presence and commitment to preserving their Orthodox heritage. Shortly after, the community faced a challenging split, resulting in the formation of Holy Trinity, Chicago’s second Greek parish, in 1897.

Despite these early growing pains, the First Greek American Orthodox Church persevered, its story intertwined with the triumphs and challenges of the Greek-American experience. The church became a beacon for generations, offering a place of worship, education, and community. It served as a source of strength during the turbulent times of World War II and the subsequent waves of Greek immigration, its doors always open to newcomers seeking a familiar haven.
