“A school with a ceramic installation? That’s unusual,” you might think. And you’d be right to be curious about Aarhus Statsgymnasium. Here, right before your eyes, stands more than just a school. Aarhus Statsgymnasium is a piece of history, a beacon of education established in 1953. It was the third gymnasium to grace Aarhus and the 38th state gymnasium in all of Denmark. The school boasts a unique identity, existing as an independent, self-owning institution under the Danish state. Within its walls, around 800 students, divided into 30 classes, embark on their educational journeys. But Aarhus Statsgymnasium’s story runs deeper than its founding date. This very building is a listed structure, a testament to its architectural significance. It was the first State Gymnasium to be born from an architectural competition. The winning design, a harmonious blend of 1920s classicism, 1930s functionalism, and 1950s modernity, was brought to life by architect Johan Richter. As you step inside, be sure to look up. An impressive ceramic installation by Asger Jorn, commissioned by the Danish state art institution Statens Kunstfond, adorns the foyer, adding an unexpected artistic flair to this place of learning. Aarhus Statsgymnasium is a testament to the enduring power of education and a silent observer of countless stories.
