Have you heard of the Shahjalal Masjid in Poplar? It’s more than just a place of worship. It’s a testament to the growth of Islam in London and the unity of its diverse Muslim community. The Poplar Shahjalal Mosque welcomes people from various Islamic branches, including Deobandi, Barelvi, Sunni, and Ahl-e-Hadees. The mosque holds a unique position in the area because of its focus on Islamic education. Whether you’re a lifelong Muslim or a recent convert, Poplar Shahjalal Mosque is a place to deepen your understanding of Islam. The original Shahjalal Masjid began humbly in 1987. It started as a single porter cabin, donated by local authorities after a request from the community. This small space accommodated only 30 to 40 worshippers. As the community grew, so did the need for a larger space. The local authorities generously donated a second porter cabin. This made Shahjalal Masjid one of the first mosques and community centers in the London Docklands, Poplar, and Blackwall area. A pivotal moment arrived in 2010 when the community had the opportunity to purchase the land where the mosque currently stands. Through fundraising and support from local councilors, they secured a 99-year lease. The community dreamt of a purpose-built mosque. In 2014, they submitted a planning application. After a thorough feasibility study, the council approved their request. Once again, the community rallied. They organized fundraising events like football tournaments, car washes, and gala dinners. By the end of the first year, they had raised enough money to begin construction. Even during the construction phase, when the mosque was temporarily closed, the community’s spirit remained strong. They held prayers in a local Muslim’s flat and used a community center for Jumu’ah. Their dedication ensured that the project continued to move forward. The Poplar Shahjalal Mosque now accommodates 300 worshippers. It hosts daily prayers, Jumu’ah, Eid prayers, and Taraweeh prayers during Ramadan. It also provides part-time Islamic studies for children aged 5 to 14. Adult classes on various Islamic sciences are offered throughout the year. The Poplar Shahjalal Mosque serves not just as a place of prayer, but as a center for learning and community connection.
