Did Frederiksberg Centret always buzz with this much activity? I doubt it. This vibrant hub, right here before us, wasn’t always a shopper’s paradise. Frederiksberg Centret first opened its doors on September 18, 1996. Imagine the excitement as people explored the brand new space. It offered a then impressive 32,000 square meters of retail space. Fast forward to 2015, and Frederiksberg Centret underwent a major transformation. A grand reopening was held on March 26, 2015. It marked the completion of a massive renovation and expansion. The project cost over 500 million kroner. This investment brought in 25 new shops, a new floor, and boosted the total retail area to around 29,000 square meters. This brought the total shop count to 90. The parking garage also got an upgrade. It now accommodates 450 cars, with the first hour free. Frederiksberg Centret isn’t just about shopping. It sits on a historic site, a former railway yard. This was once the location of Frederiksberg Station when it served as an S-train station. There was even a small freight yard here. Think of the hustle and bustle of trains coming and going, replaced now by the constant flow of shoppers. Today, Frederiksberg Centret is conveniently linked to the modern Frederiksberg Metro Station. This connection makes it easily accessible for the thousands of students from nearby Copenhagen Business School and Frederiksberg Gymnasium. In 2010, the center, with its then 65 stores, had a turnover of 1.1 billion kroner. It welcomed 6 million customers annually. Now, with the expansion, Frederiksberg Centret welcomes around 8 million visitors annually. It has been recognized both nationally and internationally, even winning the title of “Nordics Best Shopping Centre” in 2016 and “Denmark’s Best Shopping Centre” two years in a row. The center is co-owned by Danica Pension and Lægernes Pensionskasse. So, as you wander through Frederiksberg Centret, remember the layers of history beneath your feet. From a railway yard to a shopping mecca, this space has truly transformed.
