Imagine a time when this very spot was far outside Copenhagen. The Landbohøjskolen stands here now. But once, it was an agricultural hub.

Today, we explore the Landbohøjskolen. It is now part of the University of Copenhagen. But it began as the Royal Veterinary and Agricultural University in 1858.

Denmark focused heavily on agriculture then. The Landbohøjskolen became vital to the country’s economic growth. It drove agricultural development for many years.

The campus design came from Michael Gottlieb Bindesbøll. He drew inspiration from Italian country estates. Sadly, Bindesbøll died shortly after delivering his designs. The campus was built according to his vision.

Originally, the Landbohøjskolen hosted ballets and cultural events. The courtyard was a cultural haven. Knud Høgsberg remembers this nice area. Høgsberg is an Information Specialist at the SCIENCE Library.

The Royal Veterinary School moved here from Christianshavn. This move marked a new era for agricultural education. The focus shifted to this Frederiksberg location.

Niels Johannes Fjord was a key figure. He was like the Niels Bohr of food science. Fjord established an experimental institution. He developed solutions crucial to Denmark’s economy. His work helped Denmark reorganize its agriculture. Butter and bacon became the new gold for export earnings.

The Landbohøjskolen’s gardens are worth a visit. They were established as study gardens. They also serve as a green oasis for everyone. You can experience over 6000 different plants here.

You will find wild Danish herbs. Woody plants are here too. There are collections of ornamental and useful plants. Special grasses and alpine plants grow here. Roses, azaleas, rhododendrons, and heather abound. Discover ferns and forest floor plants. Explore herbs used for medicine throughout history. Many are still used in treatments today.

The official name was Den Kongelige Veterinær- og Landbohøjskole. People often shortened it to KVL.

In the flower garden, you can see the Malkepigen statue. Carl Jacobsen of Carlsberg gifted it. Vilhelm Bissen sculpted it.

Grønnegårdsvej is named after Grønnegården. This is the park between the two oldest buildings. Statues of agricultural science figures stand near Grønnegården. Peter Christian Abildgaard founded the Veterinary School in 1773. Veterinarians erected his statue in 1910.

Today, the Landbohøjskolen stands as a testament to Denmark’s agricultural past. It also embraces the future of food science and sustainability. The challenges of climate change and population growth push us to innovate. Perhaps we are on the edge of a food revolution.

Take a moment to appreciate the Landbohøjskolen. It is not just a building. It is a symbol of Denmark’s dedication to agriculture and science. Its history is deeply rooted in the nation’s economic and cultural development.
