Is it a coincidence that Saint Joseph Church stands in a neighborhood once dominated by hardworking laborers? This grand church, a beacon of faith and Polish heritage, has witnessed the ebb and flow of life in Chicago’s Back of the Yards neighborhood since 1887. The original Polish settlers, drawn to jobs at the nearby Union Stockyards, found solace and community within Saint Joseph’s walls. Imagine the hymns echoing, the scent of incense, and the murmur of prayers in their native tongue. This community thrived. Their numbers grew so large that two other Polish parishes, St. John of God and Sacred Heart, were born from Saint Joseph’s congregation. Today, the original church building still stands as a testament to those early days. It’s now known as Saint John Paul II Hall. Gaze upon the current church, completed in 1914. Its Baroque splendor, designed by Joseph Molitor, speaks to the community’s enduring faith. While the neighborhood has transformed, Saint Joseph Church remains a steadfast presence, offering mass in English, Spanish, and yes, still in Polish.
