Did you know that the Griffin Museum of Science and Industry was once the Palace of Fine Arts? It was built for the 1893 World’s Columbian Exposition.

Hello everyone. I am excited to share the story of this iconic Chicago landmark. We are standing before the Griffin Museum of Science and Industry. It is a place where curiosity meets innovation.

Originally, the building housed art. After the fair, it became the Field Museum of Natural History. But a new vision was brewing. Julius Rosenwald wanted to create a museum like the Deutsches Museum in Munich. He wanted people to interact with exhibits. He wanted them to learn by doing.

So, the Palace of Fine Arts was transformed. Its exterior was preserved. Its interior was reimagined. In 1933, the Griffin Museum of Science and Industry opened its doors. It was the first interactive museum in North America.

The Griffin Museum of Science and Industry quickly became a Chicago institution. Generations have explored its halls. They have marveled at the U-505 submarine. They have descended into the Coal Mine.

Speaking of the U-505, did you know it is the only German submarine captured during World War II on display in the Western Hemisphere? The Coal Mine exhibit uses original equipment from a real Illinois mine. Visitors ride a mine train. They experience what it was like to work underground.

In 2024, the museum was renamed the Kenneth C. Griffin Museum of Science and Industry. This was in recognition of a historic gift from Kenneth C. Griffin. His donation ensures the museum will continue to inspire future generations.

The Griffin Museum of Science and Industry is constantly evolving. New exhibits are added. Old favorites are updated. The Henry Crown Space Center was recently renovated. It now features a SpaceX Dragon spacecraft.

The Griffin Studio is a new digital space. Its premiere exhibition is Notes to Neurons. This exhibit explores the power of music. It uses interactive technology to engage guests.

The Griffin Museum of Science and Industry has something for everyone. You can explore transportation history. You can see the Pioneer Zephyr train. You can learn about genetics. You can even watch chicks hatch.

The Griffin Museum of Science and Industry is more than just a museum. It is a place where learning is an adventure. It is a place where imagination takes flight. It is a place that inspires the inventive genius in all of us. Take a look around. Feel the energy. Imagine the possibilities. The Griffin Museum of Science and Industry is ready to ignite your curiosity.
