Founded in March 1922 Mount Olivet Baptist Church began its journey in a humble home. Reverend T J Carr’s house at 499 Saint Anthony Avenue in Saint Paul Minnesota hosted the first services. The congregation quickly outgrew this space. Services moved to a tent in Reverend Carr’s backyard. Then a storefront on Rondo Avenue and Kent Streets became their temporary sanctuary. This wasn’t just any church. This was a community forging its identity.
Imagine the dedication it took. Land was purchased at West Central and Mackubin Streets. Groundbreaking ceremonies were held in August 1922. Reverend Carr himself acted as architect and builder. Members contributed their finances talents and labor. The basement was completed but Reverend Carr stepped down. Reverend M J Stewart briefly led the congregation before Reverend W B Wood arrived in 1929.
Reverend Wood a pastor from Glasco Kentucky oversaw the church during the Great Depression. He strengthened ties with other Baptist churches. In 1932 the name changed to Mount Olivet Baptist Church. His leadership established a stronger connection to the Twin Cities and the Minnesota Baptist Association. After Reverend Wood’s departure Reverend J C Bothic from Sioux Falls South Dakota led a spiritual awakening. Membership surged during his time. Mrs Mable Lee generously donated a house at 522 West Central for the church parsonage.
Reverend C B Wheeler from Des Moines Iowa took the reins in 1939. He focused on the building program. A $2000 mortgage was paid off. Plans to complete the church moved forward. He established Men’s Day Women’s Day the Youth Council and Choir Dorcas Society and the Three-way Mission Plan. Reverend D C White a strong gospel preacher from Portsmouth Ohio continued the building program. Ivy R Hagen was the Building Chairperson. The cornerstone was laid on August 18 1948. Mount Olivet continued its growth and expansion. Finally in 1951 the rest of the church building was completed and dedicated.
The church stands as a testament to faith perseverance and community spirit. Its history is rich with stories of dedication and growth. It reflects the resilience of a congregation that built its sanctuary brick by brick. Mount Olivet Baptist Church is more than just a building. It is a living legacy a beacon of hope and a cornerstone of the community. Its story continues to inspire.
