“Ever wondered how a humble library transformed into a haven for contemporary art?”

Right here at the corner of Arkwright Road and Finchley Road stands the Camden Art Centre. It is a beacon for artistic expression in the London Borough of Camden. But its story begins long before it became the centre we know today.

Originally, this building was the Hampstead Central Library. It was designed by architect Arnold Taylor. Sir Henry Harben, Deputy Chairman of Prudential Assurance Company, funded it. The library opened its doors in 1897.

This Victorian structure weathered the storm of World War II. Incendiary bombs struck it in 1940. Then, the blast from a V2 rocket hit in 1945.

The library expanded in the 1920s. However, a new, more modern facility opened in Swiss Cottage in 1964. The library stock was moved.

In 1965, the Hampstead Arts Centre was founded in West Hampstead. Two years later, it was renamed Camden Arts Centre. Community classes in painting, drawing, pottery, printing, and design began. The first exhibition happened a year later.

Jenni Lomax joined Camden Art Centre in 1990. She established a program of exhibitions and residencies. She also initiated artists’ projects and public events. Lomax led a major building refurbishment completed in 2004. Tony Fretton Architects designed the renovation.

Since 2017, Martin Clark has been the director of Camden Art Centre. In 2020, a re-brand saw the name change to Camden Art Centre. The “s” was dropped.

Camden Art Centre is known for temporary exhibitions. The centre also hosts educational outreach projects. Its program includes exhibitions, learning, residencies, and off-site projects. Artist-led activities and courses take place too.

Exhibitions showcase emerging and international artists. Historic figures and thematic group shows are presented. The centre supports artists in creating new artwork.

The artist residency program helps artists develop their practices. Practical support leads to new work and public participation. Past residency artists include Salvatore Arancio and Caroline Achaintre.

Camden Art Centre has always championed inclusivity. It profiles people under-represented in the art world. The Centre runs a SEN program led by artists with additional needs.

The new brand identity emphasizes Camden Art Centre’s location. The Arkwright Road address is part of the logotype. This celebrates its sense of place.

The logotype complements the typeface, New Rail Alphabet. Margaret Calvert and Jock Kinneir designed the original version for British Rail in 1965. That was the year Camden Art Centre was established.

So, as you step inside Camden Art Centre, remember its rich history. From a Victorian library to a contemporary art space, it has evolved. It remains a place for making, viewing, and discussing art. It fosters creativity in London.
