Lux Mundi. Light of the world. That’s the motto of Trinity Theological College. This place was born from the darkness of World War II. It stands as a beacon of hope and learning.

Trinity Theological College has a unique origin story. It began in Changi Prison during the Japanese Occupation. Fifty-four Protestant pastors and missionaries were prisoners of war. They started holding combined services. The idea for a united theological college emerged from these gatherings. Anglicans, Methodists, and Presbyterians envisioned a place to nurture Christian leaders. The Lutheran Church joined this vision in 1963.

Trinity Theological College was founded in 1948. It was the first theological college in Singapore and Malaya. Its purpose was to train leaders for the churches. The college’s birth from a dark period makes it special. It embodies resilience and faith.

Sir Winston Churchill called the fall of Singapore the “worst disaster” in British military history. Yet, even in that despair, God shone a light. This light led to the founding of Trinity Theological College. The college’s motto reflects this light: “Lux Mundi”.

The college marked its 70th anniversary in 2018. It is the oldest theological school in Singapore. The anniversary celebrations included symposiums, a service, and a heritage trail. Trinity Theological College has always remembered its roots. It ministers to those on the margins of society.

One notable story involves Pastor Daniel Lee. He had a difficult childhood. He was involved in crime and drug addiction. He was sentenced to 22 years in prison. In prison, he found God. Inspired, he studied hard and later enrolled at Trinity Theological College. He graduated in 2015 and entered full-time ministry.

Trinity Theological College is accredited by the Association for Theological Education in South East Asia. It was a founding member of ATESEA in 1957. The college offers various degrees. These include Bachelor of Divinity, Master of Divinity, and postgraduate programs.

The college also awards student prizes. The Frederick Buechner Prize for Homiletics recognizes achievements in preaching. Prizes are also awarded for excellence in Greek and Hebrew language learning.

Trinity Theological College has seen over 2,400 graduates pass through its doors. These alumni serve as missionaries and pastors. They lead churches in Singapore and around the world. The college continues to be a leading theological center. It nurtures Christian leaders. It spreads the light of the world.

Think about the legacy of Trinity Theological College. It rose from the depths of war. It became a source of hope and education. Its story reminds us that even in darkness, light can emerge.
