Would you believe that this very spot at Viby Idrætspark echoes with the cheers of thousands? This isn’t just a statue. It is a monument to Viby IF’s enduring spirit.
Viby Idrætspark stands as a testament to the dreams and dedication of a community. This is a place where local pride runs deep. Here at Skanderborgvej 224, 8260 Viby J, legends were born.
Let’s step back in time. The story of Viby Idrætsforening began in 1918. Athletics and gymnastics were the initial focus. In 1921, the association expanded to include football. Early footballers needed space. A pitch was created at Grundtvigsvej 18-24. This initial field was inaugurated on April 28, 1935. Viby Idrætsforening played against Odder Frem.
The vision for a larger sports complex soon emerged. Plans for a new stadium took shape. Kommuneingeniør N.K. Hansen led the design efforts in the late 1940s. The aim was to complete the stadium by 1949. The projected cost was around 600.000 kr. The state was expected to contribute 225.000 kr. Construction faced delays. It wasn’t until 1953 that Viby Stadion finally opened. The final cost was approximately 780.000 kr.
The official opening day was March 29, 1953. Viby IF faced Esbjerg fB in the inaugural match. Six men struggled to raise the Dannebrog flag. The strong spring wind caused problems. Despite leading 2-0 and 3-1, Viby IF lost 3-4 to Esbjerg’s reserve team.
Exactly one year later, the new clubhouse was ready. On March 29, 1954, Gunnar Clausen received the key. Kommuneingeniør N.K. Hansen also designed this building.
In 1945, a handball division was established. They lacked their own hall. They had to practice late at Aarhus Stadion. Viby’s handball team rose to the top of the Danish league. This fueled the desire for a dedicated hall. Viby Hallen opened in 1961. In the 1963-64 season, Viby’s men won a bronze medal. Viby Hallen also served the broader community. It hosted sports classes for local schools. A stage was built for public events.
Viby Idrætspark continues to evolve. Some expansion plans were realized like squash and tennis courts. Others failed such as a swimming pool. In the 1980s, a large multi-hall was planned. It included bowling alleys. The plans were never realized. The association was left with significant debt.
Aarhus Kommune approved an expansion in September 1991. This included an extension of Viby Hallen. It took time for the project to materialize. Hal 2 was inaugurated in 2005.
So, as you stand before this statue at Viby Idrætspark, remember the history. Feel the echoes of past victories. Recognize the enduring spirit of Viby IF. It is more than just a sports ground. It is a community’s heart.
