Tucked away in the charming village of Chars, the Villa des Pinsons whispers stories of creativity and rejuvenation. Originally known as “Villa des Pinsons,” this haven for artists has evolved through time. It eventually became the Villa Dufraine, named after its generous donor, Louis Dufraine, son of the sculptor Charles Dufraine. The Villa des Pinsons, bequeathed to the Académie des Beaux-Arts in 1937, started its artistic journey in the 1950s. Initially a retreat for artists nearing the end of their careers, it later blossomed into a vibrant hub for artists of all generations. The villa itself, a masterwork from the early 19th century, sits gracefully within a sprawling three-hectare park. Along with the main house are several outbuildings, forming a tranquil haven perfect for inspiration. Today, the Villa des Pinsons, now Villa Dufraine, thrives under the direction of Jean-Michel Othoniel. He has implemented a revitalized residency program in 2022. This program focuses on emerging artists, providing them with not only accommodation but also the extraordinary opportunity to exhibit their work in prestigious Parisian cultural venues. The recent renovations ensure that these budding artists find the perfect environment to nurture their talents, continuing the Villa des Pinsons’ legacy of artistic flourishing. The renovations breathed new life into the artist studios and living spaces. They created thematic workshops dedicated to diverse artistic pursuits. These included painting, ceramics, engraving, and music, echoing the diverse passions of the residents. The restoration also preserved the magnificent glass roof, bathing the studios in natural light. This fostered an atmosphere conducive to creativity and collaboration. The shared living spaces became central to the villa’s design, promoting a sense of community and enriching the bonds between the artists in residence.
