Is it a bird? Is it a plane? No, it’s Morphauna! Right here before us at the West Woodland Park Playground, stands Miles Pepper’s whimsical creation. Morphauna, a kinetic sculpture, has captivated visitors since 1999. Its name, a blend of “morphology” and “fauna,” hints at its ever-shifting nature. Commissioned by the Seattle Public Utilities for Arts fund, Morphauna is more than just a stationary artwork. It’s a dance of metal and wind, a mesmerizing display of evolving animal forms. Imagine a 20-foot pole rising from the ground, supporting a framework of stainless steel, aluminum, and brass. From this framework, wing-like and fin-like shapes extend, rotating on axles and hubs. Even the slightest breeze sets Morphauna in motion, transforming it before our eyes. A salmon leaps, then morphs into a falcon diving through the air. With another gust, a butterfly takes shape, its wings fluttering delicately. Pepper, the artist, has even suggested that with the right combination of wind, the mythical Icarus might appear, soaring towards the sun. The rhythmic movement of Morphauna evokes the rustling of grain fields in the Palouse region, a landscape familiar to Pepper. But despite his intricate design, the true magic of Morphauna lies in its surrender to the elements. Pepper built it, but nature dictates its movements. This silent giant, with its quietly spinning ball bearings, offers a captivating contrast. The juxtaposition of the dynamic sculpture and the energetic children playing nearby in the playground creates a vibrant scene. Morphauna, a hypnotic spectacle of nature and art in perfect harmony, invites us to pause and marvel at its ever-changing forms.
