“Lost in time?” a voice echoed beside me. I turned to see an elderly woman gazing at the Kadıköy Şehremaneti. “Not quite,” I replied, “More like found.” The Kadıköy Şehremaneti stands as a testament to time. It whispers stories of Kadıköy’s rich past. It has served as a vital hub for the community. This building isn’t just a beautiful landmark. It represents the heart of Kadıköy’s civic life. It first opened its doors in 1914. The Kadıköy Şehremaneti’s story intertwines with Istanbul’s historical narrative. Its roots trace back to an 1869 municipal regulation. This regulation divided Istanbul into 14 municipal districts. Kadıköy became the 13th district under this arrangement. The building itself sits on reclaimed land. This area was once known as Kumluk. Dr. Cemil Topuzlu, a prominent figure, spearheaded the building’s construction during his tenure as mayor. The architect behind this masterpiece was Yervant Terziyan, a talented Armenian architect from Istanbul. Interestingly, his design bears a striking resemblance to another of his creations. The Fatih Municipality building shares similar architectural features. The Kadıköy Şehremaneti boasts distinctive pointed arches and decorative tilework on its façade. Columns and a tower-like structure add to its unique character. It is a remarkable example of the First National Architectural Period. This historical edifice played various roles over the years. It housed the Kadıköy District Governorate. It later served as the office of the Kadıköy mayor. In 1995, the building underwent a careful restoration. This project adhered to the guidelines set by the Cultural Heritage Preservation Board. Following the relocation of the municipality, the building briefly hosted municipal council meetings. In March 2014, the Kadıköy Şehremaneti embarked on a new chapter in its life. It reopened its doors to the public as the Kadıköy History, Literature, and Art Library (TESAK). Today, it continues its mission as a vibrant cultural center. TESAK holds a wealth of knowledge within its walls. It houses an extensive collection of books, periodicals, and visual materials. It also serves as a venue for scientific meetings, conferences, seminars, and exhibitions. The Kadıköy Şehremaneti remains a beacon of history and culture. It bridges the past with the present.
