Towering above Bremen, can you feel the energy emanating from the Fernmeldeturm Bremen? The Fernmeldeturm Bremen is more than just a structure. It is a vital communication hub. Let’s dive into the story of this Bremen landmark.

The Fernmeldeturm Bremen stands in the Walle district. Its location is on Utbremer Straße. The Fernmeldeturm Bremen is about 2.5 kilometers northwest of the city center. Construction started in the 32nd calendar week of 1982. It replaced a tower in the Faulenquartier. The Fernmeldeturm Bremen was completed in 1986.

Did you know the Fernmeldeturm Bremen is a sibling of other towers? It shares its design with the Fernmeldeturm Münster and the Friedrich-Clemens-Gerke Tower in Cuxhaven. All are based on the Fernmeldeturm Kiel design. Gerhard Kreisel and Günter H. Müller from Kiel were the architects. The Fernmeldeturm Bremen reaches a height of 235.70 meters. The operating pulpit sits at 108.20 meters. It has a diameter of 40 meters.

The Fernmeldeturm Bremen plays a crucial role in broadcasting. All FM radio and TV programs from Radio Bremen transmit from here. Amateur radio operators also use the tower. The 70-centimeter amateur radio repeater DB0OZ is located here. It has an output frequency of 438.825 MHz for analog. The digital frequency is 438.325 MHz.

Deutsche Funkturm owns and operates the Fernmeldeturm Bremen. It is a subsidiary of Deutsche Telekom. The company’s headquarters are in Münster. Around 2000, there were plans for a restaurant in the operating pulpit. However, these plans were abandoned.

The Fernmeldeturm Bremen has predecessors. A 90-meter wooden tower once stood here. It featured a long-wire antenna for medium-wave broadcasting. A storm destroyed this tower in 1939. Later, a transmission mast broadcast Radio Bremen until 1950. A smaller concrete telecommunications tower also existed.

Bremen’s skyline is not extensive. Yet, the Fernmeldeturm Bremen is visible from almost everywhere. Locals affectionately call it the “Waller Spargel” or “Walle Asparagus”. It is a helpful point of orientation.

Interestingly, the Fernmeldeturm Bremen serves as a nesting site. A pair of peregrine falcons has called it home for years. The Fernmeldeturm Bremen is not accessible to the public. But it remains an iconic symbol of Bremen’s broadcasting and communication infrastructure. The foundation has a diameter of 26 meters.

So, next time you see the Fernmeldeturm Bremen, remember its story. Think of its role in connecting Bremen to the world. The Fernmeldeturm Bremen is not just a tower. It is a symbol of Bremen’s past and present.
