October 18, 2024, marked a pivotal day for the Former Hammond South Shore Line Station. The station, a familiar sight at 4531 Hohman Avenue in Hammond, Indiana, closed its doors after years of service. This wasn’t the end of the line though. A new chapter began that same day with the grand opening of Hammond Gateway Station. The Former Hammond South Shore Line Station wasn’t forgotten. It left behind a legacy of connecting commuters to Michigan City, South Bend, and Chicago. Passengers remember the high-level platforms built in 1998 and the unique platform configuration. One platform served eastbound trains, while another, resembling an island platform, served westbound trains. The Former Hammond South Shore Line Station had a modern station house. It was brown with green trim, a welcoming sight for those arriving or departing. Now, the bustle of commuters has shifted to the new Hammond Gateway Station. Yet, the Former Hammond South Shore Line Station remains a part of Hammond’s history. It stands as a reminder of the evolution of transportation and the constant pursuit of progress.
