Imagine a small, bustling community in Dallas, Texas. Around the turn of the 20th century, Oak Cliff was growing. This was before the days of sprawling highways and free-flowing superstores. Back then, a streetcar line called Hampton Place was the lifeline connecting the burgeoning community. It was a place where people could gather. People needed a place to gather, something to bring them together.

Standing before you is Hampton Place Baptist Church. Founded in 1929, the church originally was a small, home-based operation. It’s ironic that this church, now a beacon of faith in Oak Cliff’s evolving landscape, started in a humble, rented garage. The first members were so devoted to the church’s mission that they created their pews from apple crates. They even strung lights from a neighbor’s house.

You can just picture it: a group of people filled with faith and ambition, determined to create a space for their community. As the church grew, it was forced to move multiple times. Its story is one of resilience and growth – it thrived in spite of financial challenges and the loss of its founder, Rev. J.T. Bell.

However, even after the church found its permanent place in the area, its story isn’t just about brick and mortar. It’s about people. There’s a story about Bob Mayo and Jo Alice Stovall. This couple had the first formal wedding ceremony at Hampton Place. The story goes that the pastor, Rev. Roy Sutton, who was fairly new to the practice, was so nervous he even sought advice from the pastor at Cliff Temple Baptist Church about how to conduct the perfect wedding ceremony. Can you imagine your wedding being a church’s first formal ceremony?

Hampton Place Baptist Church was a thriving church for decades. Despite the changes in the demographics of the community – a shift from predominantly Caucasian to predominantly Hispanic — the church continued to evolve. Its members continued to reach out to their neighborhood and the world. It’s a beautiful testament to the enduring power of faith and community.
