“Around the world in an afternoon?” That’s the promise the Shanghai Ocean Aquarium offers. It is not just a tourist attraction. The Shanghai Ocean Aquarium or SOA is committed to marine conservation.
Here in Shanghai’s bustling Lujiazui financial district the Shanghai Ocean Aquarium stands next to the iconic Oriental Pearl Tower. The SOA is the largest aquarium in Shanghai. It is one of the biggest in Asia.
Imagine over 15000 marine animals. They represent 450 unique species. These creatures come from five continents and four oceans. The Shanghai Ocean Aquarium covers 20500 square meters. It is a joint investment by Singapore and China. More than 2 million visitors come each year.
The aquarium is divided into nine thematic zones. These zones replicate nine different habitats. Your underwater journey begins at the Yangtze River in China. Then it moves to the Amazon’s flooded forests in South America. You will find yourself in Australia’s mangroves and billabongs. Meander through Africa’s ancient rivers. After touring Southeast Asia’s humid rainforests brace yourself for Antarctic waters. Descend from sandy shores to the ocean’s mysterious depths.
Don’t miss the Chinese sturgeon and giant salamander. Electric eels and spotted seals also live here. Look out for weedy seadragons jellyfish and sand tiger sharks. The world’s first “China Zone” houses endangered Chinese aquatic animals. These animals are from the Yangtze River. A 155-meter underwater viewing tunnel awaits you. Marine animals swim right above your head.
