Who could imagine a mosque-like building dominating Dresden’s skyline, not for prayer, but for tobacco? The Yenidze, a unique structure, stands as a testament to a clever entrepreneur’s ambition. The Yenidze isn’t a mosque, despite its minaret-like chimneys and ornate dome. It’s Dresden’s iconic “tobacco mosque,” a former cigarette factory. The Yenidze showcases the ingenuity of Hugo Zietz, a Jewish entrepreneur who founded the Oriental Tobacco and Cigarette Factory Yenidze in 1886. Dresden had strict rules against industrial buildings in the city center. Zietz faced a dilemma. He needed a factory but couldn’t build a traditional one. His solution was brilliant. In 1907, he commissioned architect Martin Hammitzsch to design a factory disguised as a mosque. Inspired by Mamluk tombs in Cairo, the Yenidze features red and grey granite, colorful mosaics, and Moorish patterns. The design cleverly incorporated chimneys disguised as minarets. The Yenidze wasn’t without its critics. Many viewed it as an eyesore, clashing with Dresden’s Baroque architecture. Hammitzsch was even expelled from the chamber of architects. Zietz, however, threatened to relocate his business. The city council, fearing economic loss, relented. By 1909, the Yenidze was complete. The illuminated words “Salem Aleikum” greeted train passengers. The “Salem Aleikum” and “Salem Gold” cigarette brands became popular throughout Germany. The Yenidze even survived the devastating bombing of Dresden in 1945. The building served as a tobacco factory until 1953, later becoming a storage facility. In 1996, the Yenidze underwent a complete restoration. Today, it houses offices and a rooftop restaurant within its magnificent dome, offering panoramic views of Dresden. The Yenidze, once a controversial structure, has become an integral part of Dresden’s landscape, a symbol of innovation and a unique blend of architectural styles.
