Slipping through time, let’s pause at Sancaktepe Şehir Hastanesi. This isn’t just another hospital. It’s a sprawling medical city, a beacon of healthcare in Istanbul. Sancaktepe Şehir Hastanesi is a behemoth, a giant among hospitals. Its sheer size and capacity are impressive. Currently under construction, it’s set to be Turkey’s largest city hospital. The complex will boast a staggering 4,100 beds. The nearby Prof. Dr. Feriha Öz Emergency Hospital will also be integrated into the Sancaktepe Şehir Hastanesi complex. This addition brings an extra 1,008 beds. That means a combined total of 5,108 beds. This makes Sancaktepe Şehir Hastanesi the largest healthcare campus in Turkey. It represents a bold statement about Turkey’s commitment to advanced medical care. The project doesn’t stop there. Sancaktepe Şehir Hastanesi will house six specialized hospitals within its walls. These include a general hospital, a women’s and maternity hospital, a children’s hospital, an orthopedics hospital, a cardiovascular hospital, and a physical therapy and rehabilitation hospital, including a psychiatric hospital. Even more, a state-of-the-art rehabilitation center for addiction patients called BAHAR (Baş bağımlı Hastalar için Rehabilitasyon Merkezi) will also be part of the complex. This innovative project is a testament to a comprehensive approach to healthcare. The BAHAR project at Sancaktepe Şehir Hastanesi combines AMATEM (Alcohol and Substance Abuse Treatment Center) and ÇEMATEM (Child and Adolescent Mental Health Center) with patient accommodations. The construction of low-rise villas is underway to house this facility. The goal is to have this groundbreaking center operational within six months. This combined facility is a next-generation approach to addiction rehabilitation. But wait, there’s more. Due to the presence of an airport and runway nearby, Sancaktepe Şehir Hastanesi will also house Turkey’s first gene and cell therapy hospital. This addition will focus on treating rare diseases like SMA (Spinal Muscular Atrophy). This specialized hospital will offer both personalized cell production and application on-site. Even the licensing process is innovative. Sancaktepe Şehir Hastanesi will be the first hospital to utilize a digital licensing system. The project’s overall goal is ambitious. By the end of 2026, Turkey aims to have 50 city hospitals. Sancaktepe Şehir Hastanesi will also include a simulation center for training in laparoscopic and robotic surgery. Alongside this, a building for the Provincial Health Directorate is also under construction. These additions underscore the project’s commitment to advancing medical training and administration. Once fully operational, the Sancaktepe Şehir Hastanesi complex is expected to employ at least 20,000 people. It’s more than a hospital. It’s a symbol of progress, a testament to Turkey’s investment in the health and future of its citizens.
