Nestled in the heart of Christianshavn, Christians Kirke has a surprising history. It’s a story of mistaken identities, royal patronage, and a touch of theatrical flair. Christians Kirke wasn’t always known by this name. It began as Frederiks German Church, serving the large German community that thrived in Christianshavn. King Christian IV, founder of Christianshavn, might be surprised to find a church bearing his name wasn’t initially intended for Danes. This “German” church served its community faithfully until the late 19th century. In 1901, its name was changed to Christians Kirke to honor Christian IV and avoid confusion with another Frederiks Kirke across the harbor. The church’s Rococo elegance reflects the style of its architect, Nicolai Eigtved. Sadly, Eigtved died in 1754 before construction began. His son-in-law, Georg David Anthon, completed the church in 1759 and later designed the soaring 70-meter spire. Christians Kirke sits on a granite plinth, its yellow brick facade accented with sandstone. The interior is a surprise. It’s designed like a theatre, with tiered galleries and boxes surrounding the nave. This design ensures everyone has a perfect view of the altar, pulpit, and organ, all combined in a dramatic, stage-like arrangement. Even a small gathering feels significant in this unique space. The crypt below holds another layer of stories. Divided into 48 burial chapels, it houses a diverse group. Among them are Danish historian Peter Frederik Suhm and, surprisingly, rock and roll guitarist Link Wray. So, as you admire Christians Kirke, remember its journey from a German church to a Danish landmark. It’s a testament to the ever-evolving history of Christianshavn and a unique blend of architectural beauty and theatrical design.
