Hidden amidst a lush green landscape, Grundschule Grolland awaits. It’s more than just a school. It’s a place where history whispers through the halls and nature’s symphony plays in the surrounding gardens. Grundschule Grolland sits on the site of one of Bremen’s earliest large settlements, a garden city project designed by Friedrich Heuer between 1935 and 1940. The original school, a temporary barrack, served the community until 1954. Disagreements about the location for a new school delayed construction until after World War II. Grundschule Grolland emerged as one of Bremen’s first post-war school buildings. The single-story, brick structure, designed by Hans Krajewski and Hotzen, consists of a main building and three perpendicular wings, a design known as a “Kammschule” or comb school. In 1958, Walter Wigger designed a gymnasium to complement the school. Originally a combined primary and secondary school, Grundschule Grolland transitioned to a primary school after the Schulzentrum Huchting opened in 1971. The school later incorporated special education. Today, Grundschule Grolland thrives as a two-stream inclusive primary school. The school grounds boast extensive outdoor space. Around 2020, approximately 200 students from grades 1 to 4 learned and played under the guidance of 20 teachers and 15 additional pedagogical and social specialists. The school embraces a rich blend of academics and extracurricular activities. As a sports and music-focused school, Grundschule Grolland partners with the Bremer Philharmoniker in the Musikwerkstatt project, offering students opportunities beyond regular classes. The school’s commitment to ecology and health shines through its nature-based curriculum, projects, and celebrations. The 3,000 square meter schoolyard features a pond, insect hotel, wildflower meadow, bee colonies, nature trail, class gardens, and project-oriented raised beds. Grundschule Grolland also prioritizes healthy nutrition, with many classrooms equipped with kitchens and a nutritious lunch program. Adding to its vibrant community, a daycare center joined the school grounds in 2017, initially housed in temporary containers before moving into a new building in mid-2021. Grundschule Grolland stands as a testament to Bremen’s resilience and dedication to education, a place where history and nature intertwine to create a unique learning experience.
