Doesn’t Bedok Installation spark your curiosity? The Bedok Installation stands as a testament to Bedok’s evolving identity. It blends its rich past with modern aspirations.

Bedok, one of Singapore’s earliest documented places, traces its roots back to the 1604 map. It referred to Sungei Bedok as Sunebodo. The name “Bedok” has two possible origins. One suggests it comes from the Malay word “bedoh”. Bedoh refers to a wooden drum used for the Islamic call to prayer. Another theory links Bedok to “biduk”. Biduk means a riverine fishing boat.

Imagine Bedok as a series of villages growing around the river and coast. Each village held its own unique story. Kampong Bedok, at the crossroads of Bedok Road and Upper East Coast Road, remains affectionately known as Bedok Corner.

In the past, Bedok included Siglap. Siglap’s name comes from the Malay “si-gelap” meaning “dark one”. This likely refers to an eclipse or the thick coconut tree canopy. Tanah Merah, also part of old Bedok, means “red cliffs” in Malay. It describes the area’s reddish clay-like seaside cliffs.

Fishermen once hauled their catches of scad, wolf herring and mackerel to Siglap Market from the shore. Others farmed tapioca and vegetables. They also collected coconuts and nipah palms. These harvests went via old Changi Road to Chai Chee for sale.

The East Coast Reclamation Scheme began in 1966. It was the Housing & Development Board’s largest venture. Hills at Siglap, Bedok and Tampines were leveled. This project added 1,525 hectares of land from Bedok to Tanjong Rhu.

By the 1970s, kampongs made way for modern flats. Villagers were offered new flats. Completed in the early 1980s, Bedok New Town became a total living environment. Former farmers and fishermen found new jobs in factories nearby.

The Bedok Heritage Trail helps people discover Bedok and the East Coast’s heritage. Bedok has transformed over the years. It now has a diverse population, bustling markets, hawker centers and shopping malls.

Bedok Stadium was a popular venue. It hosted sporting events, concerts and community gatherings. Its wave-shaped roof made it memorable.

The Housing and Development Board launched the Remaking Our Heartlands program. It aimed to rejuvenate older towns like Bedok. Bedok experienced rapid urbanisation. It transformed into a modern town with public housing and amenities.

Bedok Reservoir, once a sand quarry, became a reservoir in the 1980s. Bedok Reservoir Park was established as a recreational space. The Bedok Installation reflects this blend of history and progress. It ensures Bedok’s story continues to resonate for generations.
