Ever wondered where the magic of Sanmao, China’s beloved orphan character, was born? Right here at the Zhang Leping Former Residence.
This lane garden house whispers tales of Zhang Leping. He was the cartoonist who gave life to Sanmao.
Let’s step back in time. Zhang Leping lived here for almost 50 years. His former Shanghai residence still stands today. It is a historic landmark in this city. The house, built in the 1930s, is preserved almost exactly as he left it. This preserves his life’s work and legacy.
Zhang Leping was born in 1910. Growing up in poverty shaped his art. He created Sanmao in 1935. Sanmao became a symbol. He represented the hardships faced by children during the Sino-Japanese tensions. Zhang used his cartoons as propaganda. His cartoons portrayed literary text without words. Sanmao became his way to present the wartime experiences of children and orphans.
After the war, Zhang transformed Sanmao. Sanmao reflected Zhang’s own experiences of depression and heartache. This led to The Wanderings of Sanmao. In 2006 it was turned into an animated series for children.
Zhang discovered his passion for portraying children’s happiness. He honored this muse through Sanmao. He began creating children’s books and colorful works of art. By 1950, everyone in China knew Zhang Leping. He was affectionately called “The Father of Sanmao.”
The Xuhui District People’s Government transformed his home into a two-floor museum. The first floor takes visitors on a historical journey. It shows Zhang Leping’s life and deeds. You will see beautiful pictures of his artwork. Sketches, paintings and of course his comic strips are displayed.
The second floor was Zhang’s private space. It includes a bathroom, a guest bedroom and his art studio. The second floor is preserved just as it was. Guests can experience the man’s character. They can understand how he lived.
Zhang Leping is an inspiration to many artists. Visitors can leave tributes in an art book. They can also post a note on the wall. They share how he inspired them. He was not just an artist. Zhang earned the title “Grandfather to All Children.” His work transformed their lives. He simply related to their struggles.
In 2007, Sanmao was the mascot of the Special Olympics in Shanghai. Also, the Zhang Leping Picture Book Award was founded in 2016.
As you leave the Zhang Leping Former Residence. Remember Zhang Leping. Remember Sanmao. This place stands as a reminder. Art can reflect life. It can also inspire hope.
