From the ashes of May 1968, a new light emerged on the banks of the Rhône. This light, my friends, is the Université Lumière – Lyon 2 – Campus Berges du Rhône. Its very existence speaks of a tumultuous past, a phoenix rising from the embers of social and political upheaval. Université Lumière – Lyon 2 wasn’t simply built. It was forged in the fires of change, born from the division of the original University of Lyon in 1973. This division, a direct consequence of the volatile student protests of May ’68, carved the academic landscape of Lyon into three distinct entities. Here, on the Berges du Rhône, we find one of those fragments, now a beacon of humanities, social sciences, law, economics, and management. The Université Lumière – Lyon 2 – Campus Berges du Rhône carries a unique legacy. The split from the original University of Lyon wasn’t simply a matter of logistics. It was deeply rooted in the political climate of the time, shaped by clashes between the left and right, traditionalists and reformers. Imagine the tension, the debates, the power struggles that played out within these very walls. This campus stands as a testament to that era. This rich history is woven into the fabric of the Université Lumière – Lyon 2 – Campus Berges du Rhône. The university boasts two campuses: the one here by the Rhône, and the Porte des Alpes campus in Bron and Saint-Priest. Over 26,000 students now walk these halls, contributing to the intellectual vibrancy of Lyon. Did you know that the university’s motto, “Inter Folia Fulget” – “It shines from between the pages” – is displayed in the courtyard of the library? It’s a reminder of the illuminating power of knowledge. The university’s commitment to research is evident in its 33 research laboratories, 20 of which are associated with the prestigious CNRS. The research focuses on four key areas: Health and Society, Development, Environment and Sustainability, Digitization, and Simulation and Modeling of Complexity. Université Lumière – Lyon 2, located in France’s second-largest economic hub, isn’t just a place of learning, but a vibrant center for cultural exchange. Its partnerships with over 300 institutions worldwide attract a diverse international student population. As you stand here, consider the weight of history, the echoes of passionate debates, and the promise of future discoveries that emanate from this remarkable institution. Université Lumière – Lyon 2 – Campus Berges du Rhône. A place where history, knowledge, and the future converge.
