Picture the red roof gleaming in the Chicago sun. This is Saint Andrew’s Greek Orthodox Church a beacon of faith in the Edgewater neighborhood. Founded in 1926 its first services weren’t held here. They began in a modest two-story brownstone far from this impressive limestone structure.
Imagine the early parishioners their hopes and dreams nestled within those humble walls. They laid the foundation for what you see today a testament to their perseverance and devotion. Rev Constas H Demetry led those first services a remarkable clergyman later honored with the title Doctor of the Ecumenical Throne.
The church’s journey wasn’t always smooth. It faced economic hardships particularly during the Great Depression. Yet through the dedication of priests like the Very Rev Archimandrite Irenaios Tsourounakis the community thrived. Father Irenaios even taught Greek to the children a crucial aspect of preserving their heritage.
The idea for this magnificent building emerged under Father Athenagoras Kokkinakis. He envisioned a complex that would meet the growing needs of the parish. His foresight led to the acquisition of this property on Sheridan and Hollywood roads. He later became a bishop a remarkable achievement.
Construction was a monumental undertaking costing nearly $1.5 million. Peter Camburas and Theodore J Theodore designed this stunning building. The cornerstone was laid in 1955 a significant moment in the church’s history. The first Divine Liturgy in the new Holy Cross Chapel by the Lake was celebrated in 1956.
The final consecration in 1960 marked a joyous occasion. His Eminence Archbishop Iakovos presided over the ceremony a pivotal moment for the church and its community. The beautiful mosaics the Virgin Mary and the Pantocrator on the dome are testaments to the artistry and devotion poured into this space.
