Nestled atop a hill overlooking the Rhine, Oberstadt whispers tales of Mainz’s vibrant past. Oberstadt isn’t your typical neighborhood. It emerged from administrative changes about 30 years ago. Mainz’s city center had grown too large. So it was divided into four districts. These districts are Altstadt, Neustadt, Hartenberg-Münchfeld, and Oberstadt. Oberstadt traces its roots back to Roman Mainz. As early as 90 AD, a Roman legion established its camp, a castrum, on the Kästrich. Civilians settled around it. These included soldiers’ families, craftspeople, traders, and Rhine boatmen. Remnants of this era are scattered throughout Oberstadt. You can still discover the Roman theater and the Römersteine. The Römersteine are the remains of the aqueduct from Mainz-Finthen. These ruins fascinate archaeologists and visitors alike. Oberstadt also houses the historic cellars of the Kupferberg sparkling wine cellars, established on the Kästrich in 1850. From military camps and fortifications to the Powder Tower and citadel, the hill has witnessed a transformation. Beyond the Gau- and Römertor gates, a tranquil residential area has emerged since the 19th century. Gründerzeit villas, expansive parks, and architecturally interesting settlements from the 1920s all contribute to Oberstadt’s character. The Baroque citadel from the 17th century also adds to its unique charm. Oberstadt is home to Mainz’s hospitals and university clinics. It also houses the over 500-year-old Johannes Gutenberg University. Its campus significantly shapes Mainz’s scientific and cultural life. Approximately 35,000 students are currently enrolled in the university and its more than 150 institutes and clinics. Oberstadt provides numerous recreational opportunities. Visitors can explore streets and settlements. They can also visit extensive green spaces like the Stadtpark and Rosengarten. These cater to walkers and athletes. The Volkspark is a popular destination for parents and children.
