Was this humble abode on Gunter Street always a beacon of faith? The answer, my friends, lies within the story of Freedom Home Baptist Church. Founded in 1982 not within these walls, but in the home of a devoted follower named Mildred Medearis. Imagine a small group of just 35 souls, united by their faith under the leadership of Reverend Oscar B. Howard Jr. Their journey led them from house to house, holding services at the Springfield Gardens Day Care Center and even the Alpha Seventh Day Adventist Church. They yearned for a permanent home, a place where their burgeoning congregation could truly flourish. Their prayers were answered when they purchased a property from Mr. J.D. Culp on this very street. This first church building became a testament to their perseverance, a place where the word of God echoed through the community. But their story doesn’t end there. Yearning for a larger space to accommodate their growing congregation, the church embarked on an ambitious project in 2003 – a new worship facility. This dream, however, was not without its challenges. Construction delays, setbacks, and even walkouts by contractors plagued the project. Yet, like the resilient spirit of their faith, the congregation of Freedom Home Baptist Church persevered. Finally, on Easter Sunday, 2006, they stepped into the sanctuary where we stand today. Their journey, filled with trials and triumphs, is a testament to the enduring power of faith and community.
