Can you hear the hum? It’s the ghostly echo of Kraftwerk Hafen. Kraftwerk Hafen once throbbed with the power of industry, a vital part of Bremen’s skyline. Built in 1957 in the Industriehäfen district, it stood on the right bank of the Weser River. Originally a coal-fired plant, it supplied power to the growing demands of Klöckner Hütte, now ArcelorMittal. The plant’s two initial blocks had a special feature. They were designed with load-dependent controls. This allowed them to quickly respond to the fluctuating energy needs of the steel mill. As Bremen grew, so did Kraftwerk Hafen. Two more blocks were added in 1962 and 1964. Then came the mighty Block 5 in 1968, followed by Block 6 in 1979. Block 6 boasted a 256-meter chimney. This towering structure became the tallest in Bremen, a stark symbol of the city’s industrial might. Kraftwerk Hafen didn’t just generate electricity. It also provided district heating for Bremen’s western districts through combined heat and power generation. Even in its later years, the plant underwent significant upgrades. In 2011, a retrofit extended Block 6’s lifespan to 2025. This increased its efficiency and boosted its output to 300 megawatts. In 2009, a new neighbor arrived: the Mittelkalorik-Kraftwerk Bremen. This waste-to-energy plant was built right on Kraftwerk Hafen’s grounds. Their steam cycles were even integrated. Kraftwerk Hafen is now silent, its coal-fired era at an end. Block 6 was finally decommissioned in July 2021. But the site is not dormant. A sewage sludge incineration plant is now in operation, marking a new chapter in the story of this industrial landmark. The hum may be gone, but the legacy of Kraftwerk Hafen, a testament to Bremen’s industrial past, remains.
