A humble schoolhouse on Forest Avenue, a few blocks from Fair Park, was the unlikely starting point for the Lake Highlands Baptist Church. In 1909, the church, originally known as South Park Missionary Baptist Church, took a new form, embracing the name Forest Avenue Baptist Church. That name reflected the church’s location, not the lush trees that would later characterize Lake Highlands, but the quiet, residential street where its congregation began to flourish. The church’s journey wasn’t linear, however. In 1959, it embarked on a move, seeking a new home in the Old Lake Highlands neighborhood, where it planted roots on Brookhurst Drive.
This move was not just about a new location; it was about a new identity. The congregation adopted the name Lake Highlands Baptist Church, becoming a prominent landmark in the growing neighborhood. At the Brookhurst Drive location, Lake Highlands Baptist Church continued to grow. It’s a vibrant community of faith, open to people of all backgrounds. It’s a place where sermons are shared, and faith is nurtured. The church is a constant in a world of change, offering a haven of peace and community for all who walk through its doors.
