Did you ever hear about a library built on the grounds of a former church? Vangede Bibliotek stands on a site with a rich history. The old Vangede Church, which previously occupied this spot, was demolished in 1975. The modern Vangede Bibliotek, designed by architect Kjeld Ussing, opened its doors in 1976. This isn’t just any library. Vangede Bibliotek is a vibrant community hub. It’s located on the first floor of a building in the charming Vangede Bygade. This street blends the bustling energy of local businesses with a relaxed, village-like atmosphere. Inside Vangede Bibliotek, you’ll find a spacious, open layout. One section houses children’s and young adult books, while another caters to adult readers. In the heart of the library is the main desk and a central area called “Torvet” (The Square). This space hosts rotating exhibits and various events. From the library windows, you can enjoy a view of a lush green garden. This garden isn’t just for looking at, you’re welcome to relax and enjoy the fresh air. It’s a popular gathering place for locals. You might see people walking their dogs, students chatting, school groups learning, or seniors enjoying the sun. Many regular visitors come to Vangede Bibliotek daily. They read newspapers and periodicals in the library’s comfortable chairs and cozy corners. Conversations flow freely, both among the visitors and with the library staff. Vangede Bibliotek has a strong connection to Danish culture. It is home to the Turèll Collection, dedicated to the works of Dan Turèll, a renowned Danish writer. Vangede is famous as the setting for Turèll’s classic work, “Vangede Billeder” (Vangede Pictures) from 1975. You can explore the Turèll Collection at your own pace. Every year on March 19th, Dan Turèll’s birthday, the library awards the Turèll Medal. Vangede Bibliotek is also a “key library” in the Gentofte Library system. This means you can access it even outside of staffed hours using your health insurance card. You can borrow and return books, read newspapers, or use the library computers. The library offers four public computers, a printer, and a copier. IT assistance is also available on the first Tuesday of each month. The library is a place where school life and leisure time intersect. It’s a place where the learning that happens in school can continue at home. Vangede Bibliotek inspires reading and provides a space for children and parents to enjoy activities together. It’s a place to read, play, and listen. Come and experience the unique atmosphere of Vangede Bibliotek for yourself.
