The sturdy pseudo-Tuscan columns of Bethesda Serangoon Church stand tall. They hint at a history richer than meets the eye. This isn’t just any church. Bethesda Serangoon Church is a significant part of Singapore’s Brethren movement. It’s a story woven into the fabric of this nation’s faith.
Bethesda Serangoon Church wasn’t always here on Upper Serangoon Road. The Brethren movement’s beginnings were humble. Philip Robinson and seven others started it all in 1857. Their first service? A simple prayer meeting at a house on Bencoolen Street. Imagine the quiet devotion in that small space. The congregation grew rapidly. They moved to a larger location at Bras Basah Road. This was the original Bethesda. That’s Bethesda Bras Basah.
Bethesda Serangoon Church’s current home has a unique story. It was once the private residence of Mrs Claudette M Poulier. Her family generously donated their house to the church. We don’t know the precise date of the donation. It’s a piece of the puzzle yet to be fully uncovered. The church’s design is a beautiful blend of modern and traditional influences. The elevated floors are a nod to Malay architecture. A smart solution for our tropical climate. The walls on the ground level create the illusion of a two-story building.
The large hip roof extends outwards. It provides welcome shade from the sun and protection from the rain. The church subtly incorporates Christian symbols into its design. Look closely at the elongated pentagon-shaped windows and the crucifix. They are reminders of the faith held within these walls.
Bethesda Serangoon Church is more than just a place of worship. It’s a vibrant community center. It hosts numerous activities. It even has its own kindergarten. The church also runs a Vacation Bible School. It’s a delightful program for pre-school and primary school children.
