“Lost souls seeking solace,” a weathered man once murmured, “find it at Capilla del Sagrado Corazón de Jesús.” Capilla del Sagrado Corazón de Jesús stands as a beacon of faith in Montevideo’s Cordón neighborhood. Founded in 1878, it’s more than just a chapel. It is a national historical monument, a testament to resilience and a spiritual haven. The construction of Capilla del Sagrado Corazón de Jesús spanned several decades, finally reaching completion in 1923. This journey reflects the dedication and perseverance of the community. The chapel’s neo-gothic architecture tells a story of elegance and austerity. The façade, adorned with pinnacles and gargoyles, hints at the intricate details within. Inside Capilla del Sagrado Corazón de Jesús, light floods the spacious interior, divided into three naves by sturdy pillars. The central nave, crowned by a rib vault, draws the eye upward. The side naves, with their elegant groin vaults, create a sense of harmony. The neo-gothic high altar commands attention, showcasing the image of the Sacred Heart of Jesus. The chapel’s rich history includes its designation as a national historical monument in 1975. This recognition underscores its architectural and historical significance. Within its walls lies the tomb of Father Luis Lasagna, the Jesuit founder of Colegio Seminario. Capilla del Sagrado Corazón de Jesús also serves as a pilgrimage site, drawing thousands of faithful each year. The annual “Procession of the Sacred Heart” in June is a vibrant testament to the chapel’s enduring spiritual importance. Two architects shaped the chapel’s destiny. French architect Víctor Rabú envisioned the original neo-gothic design. Italian Jesuit Giovanni Battista Contini continued the work after Rabú’s death in 1891, making significant additions like expanding the central nave. The clock tower, added in 1923, and the remodeled interior from 1950, further enrich its story. Capilla del Sagrado Corazón de Jesús is more than a chapel. It’s a sanctuary, a place of solace and reflection.
