Perhaps a cog railway is exactly what your heart desires. Welcome to the Ticket Office Trem de Corcovado. Here begins your journey to Rio’s most iconic landmark. The Corcovado Rack Railway opened in 1884. Emperor Dom Pedro II himself inaugurated it. Initially, steam locomotives hauled passengers up the steep incline. In 1910, it became the first electrified railway in Brazil. This innovative spirit continues today.

At the Ticket Office Trem de Corcovado, you’re securing more than just a ride. You’re stepping into a piece of history. The Corcovado Railway has carried countless famous faces. Pope Pius XII, Pope John Paul II, and Albert Einstein all enjoyed this ride. Even Diana, Princess of Wales, experienced its charm.

Modern trains now whisk passengers to the summit. These electric multiple units are made by Stadler. Introduced in 2019, they reach speeds of 25 km/h. The ascent takes only about 15 minutes. The previous trains only went 15 km/h. The railway cleverly recovers energy during the descent. Regenerative braking saves 75% of the overall power consumption. This is one of the few railways still using three-phase electric power with two overhead wires at 900 V 60 Hz.

The journey starts in Cosme Velho. The train climbs from 40 meters to 710 meters above sea level. The track is 3.824 km long. Some sections incline as much as 30%. As you ascend, marvel at the Tijuca Forest. Emperor Dom Pedro II ordered its reforestation in the 19th century. What was once farmland became a lush, green haven.

The Corcovado Railway has four stations. It uses a metre gauge and the Riggenbach rack system. The line operates from 8 am to 7 pm. Trains depart every 20 minutes. This allows 540 passengers per hour.

At the summit stands Christ the Redeemer. The statue is 30 meters tall. Its outstretched arms span 28 meters. It’s one of the New Seven Wonders of the World. From here, the views are spectacular. The Corcovado Railway isn’t just transport. It’s an experience that combines history, engineering, and natural beauty. As you stand at the Ticket Office Trem de Corcovado, remember you are about to embark on a very special ride. A ride to one of the most beautiful and iconic places on Earth.
