Ready to discover a vibrant piece of Marseille’s history? That piece is Boulevard de Castellane. This boulevard is more than just a street. It’s a testament to Marseille’s urban and cultural development.

Place Castellane sits in the 6th arrondissement. It is a historical square that has significantly contributed to the city’s urban and cultural development. The square got its start in the 18th century. Henri-César de Castellane-Majastre was an aristocrat. He donated the land for the square’s construction. The square evolved into a bustling hub over the centuries. It features architectural highlights. It serves as a central point for locals and tourists.

King Louis XIV had a vision in the 18th century. He wanted to align the ‘Porte d’Aix’ with the ‘Porte de Rome’. This was to be in the old ramparts of the city. Rue de Rome originally ended at the current Prefecture. It was extended to Place Castellane to fulfill this vision.

Henri-César de Castellane-Majastre played a pivotal role. He donated the land in 1774 for the construction of Place Castellane. This act led to the square being named in his honor. At the same time, he offered to finance the square’s development.

A fountain with an obelisk was erected in 1798 in the middle of the square. The fountain also served as a lavoir. This was a public place for washing clothes. In 1811, the obelisk was replaced. It commemorated the birth of Emperor Napoleon I’s son. This obelisk remained until 1911. Then it was moved to Mazargues.

Jules Cantini donated a new fountain in 1911. Sculptor André-Joseph Allar designed the fountain. It was completed in 1913. The fountain features representations of three Provençal rivers. These are the Durance, the Gardon, and the Rhône. The fountain has become an iconic symbol of Place Castellane. It is a significant piece of European heritage.

Place Castellane was chosen for an experimental installation of electric lighting in 1882. This experiment was successful. Electric lighting extended to La Canebière in 1888. This marked a milestone in Marseille’s modernization.

Over the years, Place Castellane has become one of Marseille’s nerve centers. The Castellane market offers local produce and antiques. The flower market on Avenue du Prado adds color every Friday. The Castellane district is renowned for its religious architecture. Old-fashioned buildings add charm.

Place Castellane is easily accessible today. The Marseille subway lines intersect at Castellane Station. It is the terminus of line 3 of the Tramway. Numerous shops, bars, restaurants, and cinemas surround the square.

Place Castellane stands as a testament to Marseille’s rich history. It has continually evolved. It retains its historical charm. It offers a unique experience to visitors. From its origins in the 18th century to its modern-day significance, Place Castellane is a must-visit.
