Remember the year 1912. That was when a Lebanese immigrant named Ali Haje arrived in Rio. He started his new life selling matchboxes. After years of hard work he founded the Charutaria Syria.
The Charutaria Syria stands as a testament to time. It is a tranquil oasis amidst the bustling Saara district. Ali Haje arrived alone in Brazil. He sailed in the ship’s hold. His family joined him later in 1927. They lived above the shop until 1953.
Today Emne continues her grandfather’s legacy. She represents the third generation. The Charutaria Syria has preserved its original charm for over a century. Notice the original hydraulic tile floor. Admire the skylight, counters, and wooden shelves. These details reflect the care taken in establishing this space.
Take a moment to appreciate the vintage displays. They include old matchboxes and rare cigarette advertisements. The highlight is a restored advertisement for Phósphoros Marca Olho. This was discovered during a 2004 renovation. The sign was hidden under seven layers of paint. It took four months to restore.
Ali Haje’s commitment to quality remains. The Charutaria Syria offers the finest cigars. You will find Cuban cigars and excellent Brazilian cigars from Recôncavo Baiano. The shop also has the best cigarillos.
Changing times led to new additions. In 2007 a café opened. More recently a cozy bistro was added. The café serves delicious cakes, brownies, and pies. Teas and hot chocolates are perfect for cooler days. The bistro offers light dishes and quiches. The brie and apricot quiche is a must-try. Salads and pastas pair well with a glass of wine. A selection of excellent national and international wines are available.
The Charutaria Syria was declared a Cultural Heritage Site in 2017. But sadly, in 2020, after 108 years of operation, Charutaria Syria announced its closure.
The most interesting fact is that it is forbidden to smoke in a tobacco shop. Another detail that catches your eye is a large panel. It is painted on the wall. It shows a match brand from the early twentieth century.
Step inside the Charutaria Syria. Experience a journey back in time. It is a place where the past and present blend seamlessly.
